But his recent appearances in the Supercup semifinal against Barcelona and then the final, poetically enough against Los Blancos, could suggest there still might be a place for him in the team in the not so distant future.
At the very moment, the likes of Saul Niguez, Thomas Teye, Koke and Hector Herrera are all in front of the 24-year-old fringe ace, but that doesn’t mean his fortune won’t change once he finally finds his groove.
A loan spell in the Premier League could do him a world of good and if he rediscovers the best version of himself, Atletico Madrid can throw him right back into the fray.
