da pinnacle: Paul Merson believes that Jose Mourinho regrets joining Tottenham Hotspur as manager, per The Daily Star.
What’s the word?
da bet7: Mourinho took over in November and has helped Spurs climb back into top-four contention; they are currently four points behind Chelsea in fourth.
However, they have struggled for form at times and have lost to the likes of Liverpool and Southampton, while also drawing with Norwich City.
They did manage to beat Manchester City in their last league outing, though, winning 2-0.
But Merson believes that Mourinho has made a mistake and does not think that he has properly improved his new employers.
He said: “I said when he went there it would give them a lift and there would be a charm offensive – and he was all smiles for a while.
“But everyone knew it wouldn’t last, didn’t they? He’s gone back to being Grumpy Mourinho again. And I don’t see how he’s improved them at all. Not one bit.
“He looks like he’s thinking: ‘What have I done coming here?’ You don’t see him high-fiving ball boys now do you?
“Spurs are a million miles away at the moment and they don’t have much money to spend. They didn’t buy him a striker and they won’t be breaking the bank in the next few windows either.
“Mourinho is only there to get them into the top four. I can’t see Daniel Levy wanting to win the FA Cup but not get back into the Champions League.
“But it’s not really working, is it? Chelsea are in the driving seat to finish fourth and I can’t see Spurs catching them right now.
“They are a very lucky football team at the moment because they’ve been ripped to shreds in their last two matches but still managed to win.”
He added, on the club’s win over Southampton in the fourth round of the FA Cup: “I don’t think it will work for him there. That Southampton game was like an end-of-his-Old-Trafford-reign performance.”
Mourinho’s produced some incredible footballing stars – how much do you know about them?
Give him some time
Merson simply loves making nonsense proclamations and this is yet another.
Spurs only appointed Mourinho in November and he’s been at the club for just over two months.
Yes, he has had one transfer window – Spurs signed Gedson Fernandes and Steven Bergwijn at the turn of the year – but this is not the kind of time to be tearing the Portuguese apart.
He has yet to have a pre-season and he could well win a trophy this season and guide the club into the Champions League.
Manage that and Mourinho will have Merson eating his words.
